YOUNGSTERS MAKE THE FINAL

5 March 2013

Excellent display by youth team...

THE SADDLERS' youngsters breezed into the Final of the Midland Youth Cup with a 2-0 victory over Chesterfield.

"It was a good performance from start to finish," beamed Academy Manager, Neil Woods. "We took control early with some good football and we rarely in danger of losing.

"The pitch didn't play as quickly as we would have liked it to, but we took a deserved lead following some good link-up play as we won a penalty which Jake Heath converted.

"It was 1-0 at half-time and that was the least we deserved, but we started where we left off in the second period with some nice football and it finally got its reward as we doubled our advantage following a blistering run from Alex Reid that ended with him rounding the 'keeper and slotting home.

"I was pleased with the application of our lads; it was their first real test under pressure and they came through it to play some flowing football to take us into the Final.

"In the end the 2-0 scoreline didn't truly reflect our dominance, but it was a good night's work and I must praise the contribution of Under-16 player, Rico Henry who was superb on the night and took many deserved plaudits."

WALSALL: Roberts, Sinton, Henry, Flanagan, Christopherou, Preston, Hobbis, Heath, Griffiths, Rush (Kinsella), Reid (McKenzie). Subs not used: Dallison, Bakayoko, R. Jones.

We now await the winners of the other semi-final as Notts County take on Shrewsbury Town...
