WALSALL v COVENTRY CITY

THERE was a good atmosphere within the stadium to greet the two in-form teams for this local derby.

The opening exchanges saw both sides weighing each other up with chances at a premium at either end in the opening ten minutes.

The first real raid of the game saw Andy Butler clear in front of goal as the visitors put the ball in from the left through Callum Wilson.

As the visitors continued to pose a few questions, Ashley Hemmings did well to track back and concede a corner before Franck Moussa went close with an effort that curled wide.

Paul Downing was spoken to by the referee for a trip as Coventry looked to break.

A well-worked move from a throw-in saw Sam Mantom put in a teasing cross that flashed across the face of goal in the 25th minute.

There were signs that The Saddlers were starting to get into gear as the half went on with a couple of neat moves giving Coventry cause for concern. As Featherstone's high ball was pulled back by Hemmings, Mantom fired wide.

A free-kick from Wesrcarr was handled by the defensive wall to give The Saddlers another free-kick, this time on the edge of the area. Westcarr steps up again and this time beats the wall only to be denied by a great save from former Saddlers' loanee, Joe Murphy.

Late on in the half, a corner falls out to Andy Taylor whose low strike is deflected wide by his own player with Murphy rooted to the spot.

HALF-TIME: Walsall 0 Coventry City 0

The visitors took the lead on 54 minutes when a corner found Leon Clarke whose effort was superbly saved by O'Donnell only for the rebound to fall kindly to Moussa who scored from close range.

The Saddlers looked for a response as Baxendale attempted to break into the area only for the visitors' defence to handle the threat.

There was a chance for Westcarr, however Murphy was brave to gather at his feet.

Former Coventry man, Julian Gray, replaced Baxendale on 63 minutes.

James Chambers booked as Coventry break on their left and force a couple of corners in quick succession.

After Murphy got the better of Westcarr once more, he was replaced by Troy Hewitt with around 20 minutes to go.

Then Romaine Sawyers came on for Hemmings.

As the clock ticked down, Sawyers fired at Murphy after linking up with Adam Chambers.

Callum Wilson broke the offside trap before seeing his low strike well saved by O'Donnell.

There was a late free-kick deep into stoppage time as Gray whipped the ball into the danger zone, but with O'Donnell joining the rest of his team-mates inside the area, Murphy made a big claim as the final whistle sounded.

FULL-TIME: Walsall 0 Coventry City 1
